Lli Pass Memorial

With the main road to Le Perthus congested and bombed, several thousand of them chose the mountain paths of the Manrella and Lli passes above Las Illas, then an independent municipality. The most notorious passage, on the night of 5 to 6 February 1939, was undoubtedly that of the four presidents: the Catalan Lluis Companys, the Basque José Antonio Aguirre, Manuel Azaña, president of the Second Spanish Republic and Diego Martinez Barrio, president of the Cortes. Manuel Azaña, after crossing the Lli pass with his colleagues in the snow and sharing an omelette at the Hostal des trabucayres in Las Illas, turned back to officially enter France the next day.
