Le passage de la frontières : un périple de souffrances, Les conditions sont horribles, Des milliers de personnes, épuisées et affamées, marchent sous des températures glaciales, Les autorités françaises, débordées, n'ont pas prévu l'ampleur et n'ont pas les moyens de gérer cet afflux massif. Beaucoup sont maltraités par les soldats français. Dans cette traversée de la frontière, l'accueil est loin d’être digne, Ceux qui parviennent sont souvent accueillis par des camps de concentration The rise of repression and the beginning of the exodus. At the end of the Spanish Civil War, Franco's troops, supported by the Italian army and the German Nazis, swept away the last pockets of Republican resistance. Living conditions for civilians in areas still under Republican control are rapidly deteriorating, with bombings, food shortages and increasingly violent repression. On January 26, 1939, Barcelona, capital of Catalonia, fell to Franco. Within days, hundreds of thousands of refugees took to the road towards the border, hoping to escape the Francoist invasion. Among these exiles, soldiers, civilians, women and children, all fleeing terror, head north towards France. Many, tired and desperate, know only one goal: to find refuge, a safe place, far from political persecution and summary executions. Crossing the border at Pertus: a journey of suffering In Pertus, the situation is particularly dramatic . This small village, located at the foot of the mountains, becomes a main crossing point for refugees fleeing Spain. The conditions are horrible. Upon arrival at the border, refugees face physical, political and human obstacles that make their crossing of the pass extremely difficult. Thousands of people, exhausted and hungry, walk on congested roads, often in rain and snow, in freezing temperatures. The overwhelmed French authorities did not anticipate the scale of the refugee influx and did not have the means to manage this massive influx. Many were mistreated by French soldiers, who, although sometimes supportive, remained largely indifferent to the human distress unfolding before their eyes. In this border crossing, the reception is far from dignified. Women, children and old people are forced to sleep on the ground, in deplorable sanitary conditions. The refugees suffered from illness, injuries, hunger and cold. Those who managed to cross the border were often taken in by temporary concentration camps, where they were interned before being released or sent back to larger camps such as those in Rivesaltes, Argelès-sur-Mer or Saint-Cyprien, which were only places of precarious detention.

It was after two years of work that Patrice Herman, a resident of Las Illas, took a step forward in his project on the theme of history and more specifically the Retirada, during the constitutive assembly of the new association Cami of hope, at the Hostal dels trabucayres. Its purpose is to highlight the history of the territory by establishing active and participatory links, particularly on the Retirada and the Republican exile of 1939, and wishes to contribute to the transmission of the cross-border duty of remembrance. "Every year, several hundred students and their teachers make the Retirada journey. Many anonymous people, grandchildren, children of exiled parents and grandparents come to discover this path of exile, such an important place, trodden by their ancestors. Las Illas is an important stopover for these people, as well as for hikers who walk the GR 10 and also take this path full of history. This site is crossed by 4,500 to 5,000 people per year, not counting associative and tourist groups. Today, there is a strong demand for educational materials on this path stripped of its history and which leaves without answers those who come to seek a part of their past", indicate the managers. The association has an ambitious project to set up visual supports along the paths of exile, relating the successive periods of history, associated with modern, visual and sound, multilingual means of communication. Supports that will also offer testimonies from exiles, children and grandchildren in the form of photos and videos. In a second phase, conferences and testimonies may be organized in order to share this past. The association intends to establish partnerships and collaborations with communities territorial, associations, historians, artists and also schools and in particular the University of Perpignan.
